PostSubject: Recent Study on Low Calorie Dog Food   Thu Jan 28, 2010 5:11 pm

According to the study by the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University, there seems to be wide variations between different foods designed to control weight in dogs. Variations for the foods include things such as calorie density and how much the dog is supposed to be eating. Pricing and formulas used to get how much a dog should be eating also change from manufacturer to manufacturer.

Just to put some numbers on this here are the ranges in the study which included 44 different weight-control-dogfoods:

Calorie Density varied from 217-440 kilocalories per cup
Recommended Intake ranged from.73-1.47 X dog's resting energy requirement
And price could be anywhere from $.04 cents per kilocalorie to $1.10.

Food manufacturers are supposed to label their foods “lite,” “light,” “low calorie,” “less calorie,” or “low calorie” to give an idea of the caloric content but the study found that more than half the foods contained more kilocalorie per kilogram than their labels were supposed to.

Its quite easy to see why some people could be confused as to what to feed their pets and for even those that know how to read food labels it may be that sometimes the information on the packaging is misleading.

I would agree ... Its gotten to the point where I think ppl are SO confused thst they are giving up. They are just buying a "top" brand name and and calling it "good enough".

There needs to be ONE standard of messure and everyone needs to post this on the package.
