PostSubject: Helping the animals in Haiti   Wed Jan 20, 2010 3:13 pm

http://www.dogchannel.com/dog-news/2010/01/19/organizations-mobilize-to-help-animals-in-haiti.aspx

I'm sure we've all heard of the earthquake that struck Haiti, correct? Well dogchannel has a small news article about helping the animals (live stock and companion) in the island.

Says that the AVMA has been monitoring the situation and sends medical supplies in areas where it is needed, it is expected that the supplies they will need are vaccinations and medical supplies to help with trauma. They are hopefully going to do mass vaccination and feeding of the backyard livestock, but the spokesman of the IFAW says that the large population of stray dogs on the island is a concern in regards to rabies.

Getting an official invite to be able to help the animals is proving to be an issue. But they say that they (the IFAW) along with the World Society for the Protection of Animals have both agreed to lead a coalition of rescue groups to bring up the needs of the animals in Haiti. There is about 5 million livestock animals along with countless companion animals and wildlife that have all been adversely affected by the earthquake and need help.

There are many other organizations that are also lending a hand to help animals in need. The link above gives those details as well as a few links.

Funny about this topic Steven, I was talking to some people about the news coverage and all the filming of Haiti and I said that it was soooooo strange that I had not seen one pix of a dog or cat. It is such a poor country maybe there are just not many pets, I did not even see any strays. Hugs Susan & Lexcee

Ya who knows about that, right now I think the main concern is helping the people, guess thats why there wouldn't be much coverage about it. Also most of the shots I've seen have lots of people in them, I'm thinking most animals stay clear of those heavily trafficated places. And you know how many animals are earthquake sensitive? It could be that many animals are most likely hiding or have gone to safer areas (since they could still be feeling seismic activity that people don't feel.
